OmniSwitch/ Router

Advanced, multi-layer switching
Alcatel’s OS/R is an advanced, multi-layer switching platform (layer 2 and 3), equipped with a 22 Gbps distributed switching fabric to support even the most demanding backbone switch requirements. A full breadth of interface options are available including token ring, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM uplinks, WAN uplinks, and packet-over-SONET.

OS/R supports a wide selection of interface options and XOS, the most powerful switch operating system available. Included in XOS are the Switched Network Services, a technically advanced suite of switch services that help manage and control all corporate networks. These include address management, directory, security, multicast, QoS, and advanced management services.

Network managers are deploying different technologies at the desktop and backbone to maintain a bandwidth hierarchy. Many organizations use switched Ethernet or Fast Ethernet for their desktop connections. These same organizations are maintaining their bandwidth hierarchy by migrating their backbones to Gigabit Ethernet and ATM. Their switches require both raw speed and powerful network services to support their complex environments. Designed for optimal performance even under the most demanding networking conditions, OS/R uses a distributed architecture where each module provides the processing power required for its associated ports. This is critical at the network core.

Features and benefits
High-speed backplane capacity— OS/R supports a 22 Gbps distributedswitching fabric and sustained switching throughput. This high-performance throughput ensures users of the needed capacity to support the increasing bandwidth demands being placed on the network.
Authenticated security— OS/R offers integrated authentication network security. Network users are placed into secure user groups or subnets during their network login. This ensures that data access is secure for a specific group of users and users are not required to pass through a slow firewall to access resources.
Scalable layer 3 switching— All modules are available with OS/R’s optional Hardware Routing Engine (HRE-X) to provide layer 3 switching for both IP and IPX traffic. This ensures that as more modules are added to the chassis, the chassis’ routing performance scales to support the additional ports. An OS/R chassis routing performance scales from 1.5 Mpps to 12 Mpps.
WAN uplinks— The OS/R offers a powerful selection of WAN uplink modules, which includes DS-3, E3, T1, E1, ISDN-BRI, and serial interfaces. This allows users in geographically disperse locations to connect directly into the corporate backbone switch without the need for a separate external router.
Redundant architecture— The OS/R offers redundancy for all critical components. This includes redundant power and Management Processor Modules and a distributed architecture that keeps the chassis running even if a single module fails. These components, along with the OS/R’s next-generation design ensure maximum uptime for each switch and the entire network.

OS/R is an advanced, multi-layer switching platform equipped with 22 Gbps distributed switching fabric.

Product system overview
Each OS/R consists of four hardware components: the OS/R chassis, power supply, Management Processor Module (MPX), and individual switching modules. Every chassis has the capability of supporting Ethernet, token ring, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM uplinks, WAN uplinks, and packet-over-SONET. Any of these media types are supported on modules that can be added to the OS/R chassis in any combination of media types. Users are limited by the number of slots in the OS/R chassis and not by the media types they are using on their network.

OS/R chassis

The OS/R chassis houses the MPX, power supplies, and individual switching modules. The chassis’ modular design supports any combination of modules, allowing users to configure it to meet their precise networking requirements. The OS/R’s passive backplane can house redundant critical components, offering a very robust, reliable system unmatched by any product in its class. The chassis are available in either 5-, or 9-slot options. Switching fabric — 22 Gbps distributed switching fabric (max.) Management Backplane — manages interaction and shares data between the different modules on the OS/R.
